Abner Aguilar: A Determined Eye to the Future

Like many young people in Guatemala, Abner Daniel Aguilar has beaten the odds simply by being in school at all. Abner left home at the age of eight in order to escape abuse at the hands of his stepfather. For seven years, he lived with other families in the community, working for a meager $0.65 per day planting in the potato fields or cleaning houses. With little time for school, Abner quickly fell behind and was forced to drop out...

Another exciting tour season has passed, and thanks to your help, CoEd volunteers were able to accomplish the following:

10 Textbook Schools Inaugurated of 11 total schools that received first-ever textbooks this February

 

Textbook Schools Re-inaugurated out of 40 total schools that were able to replace books for at least one subject this year using savings from their sustainable revolving funds 

 

2 Computer Centers Inaugurated out of 5 new Computer Centers installed this year

 

2 CORP Schools Inaugurated for a total of 18 schools currently in the Culture of Reading Program (CORP)

 

61 Volunteers traveled to Guatemala with CoEd this February

 

6 Guatemalan Departments visited (Departments are the equivalent to US states or Canadian provinces.)   

 

1 Guatemala National Radio Broadcast Radio TGQ in Quetzaltenango was there to report on the Computer Center inauguration at El Pedregal school...and the festivities were broadcast throughout the entire country of Guatemala!    

 

Countless Tortillas consumed by our hard-working (and fun-loving) volunteers!
