More About Me

Community: Cerritos
Grade: 8th
Birthday: January 24, 2005
Favorite Subject: History, because I learn about our ancestors
Dream: I want to be a lawyer because I see the injustices of the country and I want to help the people who wish the peace of the country.

Biography: My name is Alejandra, I am a very happy girl, and I am 13 years old. I am currently living with my mother, because my father abandoned us.

I study in a school of my community. I like to be responsible and turn in all my homework on time.
The community where I live is very beautiful, most of the people work in agriculture, specifically planting various types of vegetables. Men and women must go to look for work in the fields every day. People gather in a town not very close from here to find work, and it is increasingly difficult to get a job. The conditions are very difficult in the field; sun and rain make the work very challenging. For that reason, my mother recently found another job and travels to Guatemala City to do domestic work. Her absence has made me feel very sad. Since she is my only support, she motivates me every day because she works very hard. We borrowed the house where we live, it belongs to my maternal grandparents. Half day on Saturdays, I work taking care of my uncles’ children and he pays me Q15.00 ($ 2 USD), the other half day I work with my grandmother, I get pay the same for helping with the pea planting. I dream of being a lawyer because I see the injustices of my country, I would like to help those people who want peace. And the sponsorship would be the only opportunity to achieve my dreams.

What Is Guatemala Like?

Guatemala’s Western Highlands exhibit one of the most extreme combinations of systemic poverty, illiteracy, and inequality in the hemisphere. 3 out of 4 people live in poverty, and 1 in 3 cannot read or write.

Students face overwhelming obstacles to stay in school:

  • lack of financial resources
  • pressure to marry early
  • alcoholism or abuse in their homes
  • gang culture
  • lack of familial support
  • belief that education is not worth investing in

As a result, 95% of poor, rural students never graduate from high school.

You can help a student beat the odds by becoming a sponsor today.
