More About Me

Grade: 6th
Birthday: 07/30/2007
Favorite Subject: Language and Communication

Dream: To be a nurse

Biography: My name is Ana. I am 12 years old. I have a dog named Chester. My favorite food is hilachas. My favorite color is light blue. I am excited by that color. My favorite subject is communication and language because we learn to read better. My dream is being able to be a nurse so that I can help my mother who has a heart illness and faints frequently. I have 5 siblings. When my brother and I arrive from school my mother gives us food, then we clean the place to be able to do our homework. My mom is a housewife. She knits and she also goes to the hills to plant. That’s why I also help my mom with the housework. The thing that I like the most about my family is when we are all together. Three of my siblings, who did not study, have gotten married and have a family. My dad takes us to the hill with my little brother and we both help my dad with the planting. My dad plants only in the winter season. When the season ends, he is dedicated to making nylon decorations for different activities. The neighbors and acquaintances know that my dad does this work and they look for him to make decorations for their activities. The house in which we live was built by my grandfather and it is an inheritance that he left to my dad. I have 5 siblings who have all studied until 6th grade of elementary school. My parents have told me that they will only support me so that I can study until 6th grade like my brothers and then if I want to continue studying I would have to work to pay for my studies because they could not support me. If they gave me the COED scholarship I would strive to have good grades and pay more attention in class.

What Is Guatemala Like?

Guatemala’s Western Highlands exhibit one of the most extreme combinations of systemic poverty, illiteracy, and inequality in the hemisphere. 3 out of 4 people live in poverty, and 1 in 3 cannot read or write.

Students face overwhelming obstacles to stay in school:

  • lack of financial resources
  • pressure to marry early
  • alcoholism or abuse in their homes
  • gang culture
  • lack of familial support
  • belief that education is not worth investing in

As a result, 95% of poor, rural students never graduate from high school.

You can help a student beat the odds by becoming a sponsor today.
