More About Me
Community: Santa Lucia
Favorite Subject: Artistic Expression
Dream: A high school diploma in hotel management and tourism.
Biography: My name is Andrea and I live in Cuidad Vieja. Since I was young I liked to watch my older sister study, do her homework, and go to school. Later, I was sent to study and since then, I developed an interest in studying and going to school. Sometimes I see other children crying but I love school. I like doing my homework, painting, and drawing. My father hopes that I continue studying and he has congratulated my sister and me for being good students. I want to prove that as a woman, I can be someone important in life. I want to be a professional and graduate in the hotel and tourism industry. I want to have a job and be able to go to college. I want to help my parents move forward and get ahead. I know if I study, I can change my way of life and make it better. I also know that I must concentrate on my studies, obey my parents, and get through obstacles that come my way. In my school, my favorite subject is artistic expression because I can express my emotions in different works of art. I also enjoy cooking. I know that with this scholarship I will be able to fulfill my dreams.

What Is Guatemala Like?
Guatemala’s Western Highlands exhibit one of the most extreme combinations of systemic poverty, illiteracy, and inequality in the hemisphere. 3 out of 4 people live in poverty, and 1 in 3 cannot read or write.
Students face overwhelming obstacles to stay in school:
- lack of financial resources
- pressure to marry early
- alcoholism or abuse in their homes
- gang culture
- lack of familial support
- belief that education is not worth investing in
As a result, 95% of poor, rural students never graduate from high school.
You can help a student beat the odds by becoming a sponsor today.
