Dream: To continue studying and get my degree in hotel management and tourism. I dream to have a job as a tour guide so I can know all of the places in Guatemala.

Biography: I work really hard in school. My mother decided to go to work in the capital and left me in the care of other family members. She sends money to cover my basic needs. During my school break I work from Monday to Saturday at a coffee farm cutting coffee. I have to walk 45 minutes to get to the farm. We earn money based on the amount of coffee we cut and get paid about 5 cents per pound. My sister and I cut between 80 and 110 pounds of coffee a day. I live in a small village called Buena Vista and I must walk 30 minutes to get to the institute to study. My community does not have internet and so I must travel to the town to do some of my homework. Regardless, I always turn in my assignments. I also take over some responsibilities at home like dressing my siblings when they go to school and cooking and feeding my family. My parents do not want me to continue studying. I am hopeful that my older sister who works as a maid in the city will help pay for my studies. But my father thinks some of the male children should get an education first. My family does not own land to plant; each year we rent 3 acres of land that we cultivate. We plant corn and eat it ourselves and sell some. My father works as a day laborer on a farm together with my brother. My mother is a housewife and tries to support her children in their education. To earn money, my mother raises chickens, sells the eggs and sells some chickens to cover our school costs. Five of my siblings are currently studying. My mom is also studying first grade and excited that she has already learned how to read! My older brother who had to quit school works in order to save money and resume his studies, but so far he has not achieved this goal. I have 10 brothers and sisters and my grandfather also lives at home. We only have a room that is 20 feet long where 13 of us sleep. All of my older siblings had to leave school. The younger ones are studying primary school but most likely we’ll all need to leave after 6th grade. Without the support of CoEd, I will not continue studying and will have to leave school after this year because I won’t be able to continue to pay.
