More About Me

Community: Cerritos
Grade: 7
Birthday: September 23, 2005
Favorite Subject: Math because I like to learn formulas and I like numbers.

Dream: To be a secretary so I can work in a business, because I like to take care of people and I like to dress formally (jacket and skirt).

Biography: It’s my dream to graduate and become a secretary so I can work in a company and support my family. In order to achieve my dream I walk one mile each day to and from school. I’m working hard at school and am so proud to be on the honor roll! I have two sisters – my older sister is progressing through high school thanks to help from CoEd and my younger sister is too young to attend school. Our house is small and simple consisting of two rooms and a kitchen. The walls are made with adobe (mud) and wood. My family cooks over a wood stove. My parents are having financial trouble because my father does not have a stable job. He works as a day laborer in the field and the money he makes each week only covers the cost of food for our family. Our financial troubles get worse in the summer because there is no farming work in our community during that season. The community does not have an irrigation system so we have to wait until winter to plant more crops. My mother was a housewife but also works as a day laborer when she can.Since my family is struggling financially, I really need support of a CoEd scholarship. Without it, I will probably need to stop my studies after finishing 6th grade so my parents can use the little money they have to help my older sister graduate.

What Is Guatemala Like?

Guatemala’s Western Highlands exhibit one of the most extreme combinations of systemic poverty, illiteracy, and inequality in the hemisphere. 3 out of 4 people live in poverty, and 1 in 3 cannot read or write.

Students face overwhelming obstacles to stay in school:

  • lack of financial resources
  • pressure to marry early
  • alcoholism or abuse in their homes
  • gang culture
  • lack of familial support
  • belief that education is not worth investing in

As a result, 95% of poor, rural students never graduate from high school.

You can help a student beat the odds by becoming a sponsor today.
