More About Me

Community: Paley
Grade: 7
Birthday: January 24, 2006
Favorite Subject: Math, because I like to think and solve problems.

Dream: I dream of graduating in order to be a pre-primary teacher, because I would like to teach kids the way my teacher teaches me now.

Biography: I come from a big family with very limited resources. My siblings haven’t been able to finish their studies due to their lack of financial resources. Our mom is a housewife and our dad is a farmer, so our family makes a living off of subsistence farming; what we produce is primarily used for us to eat during the year. Due to my family’s economic condition, I have been the leader of my family since 1st grade up until 5th grade. My family’s house is completely unfurnished, and doesn’t have a sewer system. My dad said, “I think education is really valuable, but we don’t have the financial resources available to afford it. My daughter is very intelligent and I wouldn’t want to see her in the fields suffering the way we do, and I hope that someday my daughter will overcome in life as a working professional.” I really like school and want to move forward in life, get good grades, and become an outstanding person and make a name for myself, but sadly my family doesn’t have the resources to support me. Without the support of CoEd, I won’t continue my studies, and will dedicate myself to working in the fields with my parents.

What Is Guatemala Like?

Guatemala’s Western Highlands exhibit one of the most extreme combinations of systemic poverty, illiteracy, and inequality in the hemisphere. 3 out of 4 people live in poverty, and 1 in 3 cannot read or write.

Students face overwhelming obstacles to stay in school:

  • lack of financial resources
  • pressure to marry early
  • alcoholism or abuse in their homes
  • gang culture
  • lack of familial support
  • belief that education is not worth investing in

As a result, 95% of poor, rural students never graduate from high school.

You can help a student beat the odds by becoming a sponsor today.
