More About Me
Favorite Subject: My favorite subject is natural sciences because I like nature and it talks about living beings and life.
Dream: I would like to become a doctor and to save lives.
Biography: I’m 12 years old. My name is Kely. I live with my parents. I like to study and my greatest dream is to become a doctor. What inspires me to keep studying is that I want to be a distinguished woman and professional, so that in the future, I can work in that profession and have a job that allows me to improve my life. I dream of a unique opportunity, one that the majority of women in my community have not had, an opportunity to prepare myself academically. That has kept them in positions of domestic work, in roles of mothers, or destined for other laboring jobs just to allow them to meet their basic needs. For that reason, I have many wishes to study and prepare myself to make a change for my family. Without a doubt, my parents would be very pleased. My father works in the fields. My mother is a housekeeper and weaves fabrics that take her three months to complete and she later sells them. This income allows them to support our family. It was very difficult for my parents to conceive children because my mother faced health problems. After all of their many efforts, God permitted me to be born, and for this reason, I am the only child. I admire my parents for their strength and how they keep going after even all they have been through. Before, the lack of resources would not permit me to complete my studies. This scholarship inspires me because it is an opportunity to achieve my dream.

What Is Guatemala Like?
Guatemala’s Western Highlands exhibit one of the most extreme combinations of systemic poverty, illiteracy, and inequality in the hemisphere. 3 out of 4 people live in poverty, and 1 in 3 cannot read or write.
Students face overwhelming obstacles to stay in school:
- lack of financial resources
- pressure to marry early
- alcoholism or abuse in their homes
- gang culture
- lack of familial support
- belief that education is not worth investing in
As a result, 95% of poor, rural students never graduate from high school.
You can help a student beat the odds by becoming a sponsor today.
