More About Me

Community: Pajales
Grade: 6th
Birthday: 12/23/2001
Favorite Subject: My favorite subject is math because we do a lot of math exercises.

Dream: I would like to work in tourism because I like to learn other languages and know new places. Also, I want to meet new people and communicate with them easily.

Biography: My name is Libny and I live in “Pajales II”, a village in Acatenango. I am very happy living with my mother, father, and three younger siblings, even though my family’s income is quite low. My family and I have been through difficult times, especially when my mother was sick. All the financial income went towards paying for her operations and medicines. My parents have taught me to be hardworking. I work once a week with my aunt, selling snacks at the school in my community. During the holidays, I work as a domestic worker and I manage to earn a bit more money, but it is not enough. In regards to my parents, my father is a day laborer. His job is very tiring and badly paid. My mother never went to school. She works making tortillas and washing other people’s clothes. Math is one of my favorite classes. I believe that it is very important to be able to keep accounts. I would like to study tourism in the future, since I would like to know other places and to be able to start conversations with people from other countries. This way, I can enrich my knowledge. Life in my village is very difficult. Opportunities to continue studying and to have a job are complicated, especially when you do not have an academic level. I long for a better future, not just for me, but also for my family. I would like to be the first graduate in my family to be able to work and to help. I am going to achieve this through the scholarship, which I have been really looking forward to.

What Is Guatemala Like?

Guatemala’s Western Highlands exhibit one of the most extreme combinations of systemic poverty, illiteracy, and inequality in the hemisphere. 3 out of 4 people live in poverty, and 1 in 3 cannot read or write.

Students face overwhelming obstacles to stay in school:

  • lack of financial resources
  • pressure to marry early
  • alcoholism or abuse in their homes
  • gang culture
  • lack of familial support
  • belief that education is not worth investing in

As a result, 95% of poor, rural students never graduate from high school.

You can help a student beat the odds by becoming a sponsor today.
