More About Me
Favorite Subject: Artistic Expression
Dream: To be a teacher.
Biography: My name is Maritza. I am 12 years old. My family consists of two parents and a sibling. I live in Cerritos. My dad does farming for a living and my mom sews “güipiles” (traditional embroidery and textiles) with a sewing machine. At home, I have two cows. Their names are Muñeca and Linda, and very soon Muñeca will have a baby. We will call it Lola. I have more than six cats. Every Sunday, I go to church with my family. I am in 6th grade at Cerritos Elementary School. My favorite subject is artistic expression because I love to draw and paint. Also, I would love to go to school because I know if I try hard enough, I can have different opportunities than those that my family had. I would love to see Europe. I want to be a teacher and for my parents to be proud of me.

What Is Guatemala Like?
Guatemala’s Western Highlands exhibit one of the most extreme combinations of systemic poverty, illiteracy, and inequality in the hemisphere. 3 out of 4 people live in poverty, and 1 in 3 cannot read or write.
Students face overwhelming obstacles to stay in school:
- lack of financial resources
- pressure to marry early
- alcoholism or abuse in their homes
- gang culture
- lack of familial support
- belief that education is not worth investing in
As a result, 95% of poor, rural students never graduate from high school.
You can help a student beat the odds by becoming a sponsor today.
