More About Me

Community: Yepocapa
Grade: 12
Birthday: March 13, 1997
Favorite Subject: Natural sciences, I like to study how animals live, how to avoid disease and how to take care of the body.

Dream: I want to be an architect so I can build buildings. I also would like to be a teacher so I can teach values. I also would like to be a lawyer so I can defend the rights of people.

Biography: People say I am a fighter because I work tirelessly for what I want. The only thing holding me back from being successful in school is my parent’s financial situation. I have done really well in school but had to leave for a few years because my family didn’t have the money to pay. Right now I work as a day laborer and pay for my studies – but this does cause difficulties. My father doesn’t have a job because he is quite old. Without the help of the scholarship I will have to stop studying and maybe join the army (where not much education is required). I have had to work to support myself and my family for a very long time. When working in the field I realized that studying is so important and that life is very difficult without education. I am quite old for my grade because I started late and took a few years off. My family doesn’t own our own house but we live in a house provided by a family member. I work with the neighbors as a day laborer and am paid about $7/day to tend to a parcel of land. I was part of my school band but had to drop out because I couldn’t afford the uniform. Right now I receive a scholarship from school to pay for my tuition but I use the money I make at work to buy the school supplies. I am determined to graduate from high school. But without the support of CoEd I will likely have to leave school because I won’t be able to pay the steep costs of high school on my own.

What Is Guatemala Like?

Guatemala’s Western Highlands exhibit one of the most extreme combinations of systemic poverty, illiteracy, and inequality in the hemisphere. 3 out of 4 people live in poverty, and 1 in 3 cannot read or write.

Students face overwhelming obstacles to stay in school:

  • lack of financial resources
  • pressure to marry early
  • alcoholism or abuse in their homes
  • gang culture
  • lack of familial support
  • belief that education is not worth investing in

As a result, 95% of poor, rural students never graduate from high school.

You can help a student beat the odds by becoming a sponsor today.
