More About Me
Favorite Subject: My favorite subject is mathematics because I like addition and subtraction.
Dream: I want to become a doctor to help the community, and because I want to achieve my dream of being a professional.
Biography: I am Miriam, a girl with a lot of enthusiasm for studying. I am 14 years old. I am the third of six children. We all live with my parents and the house we live in is our own. I am currently in school and my dream is to graduate as a doctor so that I can help my community. I would like to become a professional woman, even though the economic conditions of my family are difficult. There is also the problem of alcoholism that my father suffers from, which makes it difficult for him to find work and limits our opportunities. But when he finds work as a laborer, he goes to plant fields under the hot sun and is very tired. He receives pay of 40 quetzales (US$7.00) per day and can work three to four days a week, but it is not sufficient to cover the costs of our home. My father’s alcohol problem makes me very sad sometimes because it complicates our family’s situation. My mother has told me that it would be very difficult for them to support me in continuing my studies. However, through the help of the scholarship, I could study and achieve my dream to escape the poverty in which my family lives. The hope of my mother is that I can have the opportunity to become a professional woman. The efforts of my parents and my sisters lift me as I study, and also with the support of a scholarship from CoEd, I’m motivated to stay strong each day.

What Is Guatemala Like?
Guatemala’s Western Highlands exhibit one of the most extreme combinations of systemic poverty, illiteracy, and inequality in the hemisphere. 3 out of 4 people live in poverty, and 1 in 3 cannot read or write.
Students face overwhelming obstacles to stay in school:
- lack of financial resources
- pressure to marry early
- alcoholism or abuse in their homes
- gang culture
- lack of familial support
- belief that education is not worth investing in
As a result, 95% of poor, rural students never graduate from high school.
You can help a student beat the odds by becoming a sponsor today.
